CASE STUDY
SPH Media ’ s cloud platform team purchased the HashiCorp Cloud suite on the HashiCorp Cloud Platform ( HCP ).
The mindset shifts , new cloud platform team and HashiCorp tooling ultimately allowed SPH Media ’ s developers to get applications and services up and running smoothly and more quickly than ever .
What work was done by SPH Media in demonstrating to existing employees and clients that the transformation was not only necessary , but would take SPH Media forward ?
Transformation is not merely a technical exercise but also cultural .
HashiCorp ’ s suite of tools allowed SPH Media to create new isolated virtual private clouds not connected by AWS transit gateways .
We asked George Irwin , Director of Engineering , SPH Media , to find out more :
How did SPH Media identify what it needed from a cloud solution to enable transformation from a print first brand to a digital operation ?
While digitisation is not new to SPH , we recognized the need to evolve our technology and products to improve resiliency , increase our rate of innovation and to allow us to move as fast as our increasingly digitalfirst audiences .
The solution needed to help us reduce our technical debt , reduce complexity of our infrastructure and make it more resilient and secure .
From an IT infrastructure standpoint , we needed to modernise our existing environments that were built to support print media and newsrooms , to support the transformation .
To succeed more broadly , we need to engage our readers in new ways and in new channels , so we need to first understand their digital habits within the context of the so-called ‘ Attention Economy ’.
Within our tech division , our engineering and IT teams broadly understood the need for transformation and the scope of improvement to be made to our technical landscape . We quickly established the transformation process with the mindset : “ You build it , you run it ”.
How did SPH Media go about creating the ‘ unified cloud platform team ’ that would drive the transformation forward ?
Beyond its technical infrastructure , SPH also wanted to attract talent including skilled engineers through community outreach . Together , these efforts were key to a successful modernization .
To overcome the hurdles of a large-scale transformation , SPH created a unified Platform Engineering team to focus on cloud governance , infrastructure deployment and developer experience .
