The EPIX Portfolio
More paper, less plastic Henkel’ s EPIX ® technology is a portfolio of materials designed to extend the functionality of paper. The portfolio was developed to create viable alternatives to plastic packaging that have similar robust protection properties and with the added benefit of recyclability. With EPIX ® technology, paper products can provide barrier protection against grease and water, for example, as well as thermal insulation and impact to mechanical resistance. At the same time, the EPIX ® portfolio offers these properties in lightweight paper configurations, helping to reduce the space needed for shipping or disposal, packaging weight, and associated transportation costs. All this was achieved while keeping EPIX ® technology solutions recyclable. ® Applications for EPIX ® technology include areas such as paper cups, food trays, paper-based wraps, containers, and eCommerce packaging. As the popularity of eCommerce skyrockets, the packaging materials used for shipping rise in kind. Conventional mailers are often plastic-based, difficult to recycle, and take up valuable space in eCommerce shipments. The role of packaging in eCommerce, however, is complicated as it must be durable yet lightweight, water-resistant yet recyclable, and flexible yet robust.
Henkel’ s engineering teams innovated a solution using a fluffy, lightweight form of glue sandwiched between two lightweight sheets of paper. A new and improved eCommerce padded mailer became a reality. p
