INTELLIGENT TECHNOLOGY: SOFTWARE

Horizon Quantum becomes first quantum software company to own and operate a quantum computer

Horizon Quantum has announced the completion, assembly and integration of its first in-house quantum computer at its Singapore headquarters, marking a milestone for the company and for the broader quantum software ecosystem.

Fully built from individually selected components and operated directly by Horizon Quantum’ s engineering team, the new system makes the company the first quantum software firm to both own and run a quantum computer.
The achievement reflects Horizon Quantum’ s conviction that meaningful progress toward practical quantum advantage requires deep coordination between hardware and software enabled by end-toend control of the full technology stack.
With the commissioning of this system, Horizon Quantum now operates a dedicated hardware testbed that allows the company to refine, validate and tightly integrate its execution environment with the low-level electronics that drive the quantum processor.
This capability is expected to narrow the persistent gap between theoretical quantum algorithms and their physical realisation, strengthening the performance and reliability of Triple Alpha, Horizon Quantum’ s integrated development environment for quantum application builders.
Direct access to hardware is also poised to accelerate experimentation with pulse-level programming, calibration routines and emerging compilation techniques that depend on precise control signals and feedback.
This flexibility enables Horizon Quantum to test its software infrastructure across diverse hardware configurations while advancing its long-term goal of delivering hardware-agnostic development tools that support both cloud-based quantum computers and systems deployed in conventional data-center environments.
Although the inaugural system is based on superconducting qubits, Horizon Quantum plans to expand its testbed to accommodate multiple quantum modalities. The facility has capacity for several machines and the company intends to integrate additional architectures over time, ensuring that developers using Triple Alpha can target a broad and growing range of platforms.
Horizon Founder and CEO Dr Joe Fitzsimons emphasized the strategic importance of the initiative, noting that solving real-world computational challenges will require close alignment between quantum hardware and the software layers that orchestrate it.“ By establishing an in-house testbed, we are placing the company in a compelling position to build a sophisticated hardware-agnostic development and execution stack that integrates tightly with hardware control systems and that will help unlock quantum advantage.”
Harry You, Chairman and CEO of dMY Squared Technology Group, Inc, praised the accomplishment, calling it a demonstration of leadership in quantum software infrastructure and expressing enthusiasm for the company’ s continued progress.“ We are thrilled to support their continued execution and look forward to completing our business combination as Horizon accelerates toward its vision.”
Rather than relying on a single vendor, Horizon Quantum assembled its machine from best-inclass technologies across the industry. The system combines a cryogenic platform from Maybell, control electronics from Quantum Machines and a superconducting quantum processor supplied by Rigetti. Designed with modularity at its core, the setup allows easy interchange of quantum processors, control stacks and supporting subsystems.
Horizon Quantum plans to make access to the new system available through Triple Alpha. The company views this milestone as a foundation for rapid iteration, deeper collaboration with hardware partners and accelerated delivery of tools that help developers prototype, optimise and deploy quantum solutions capable of addressing high-value computational problems across industries in the years ahead globally. p
