PROJECT ROUND-UP

JAPAN SINGAPORE
Nokia is collaborating with Japan’ s NTT DOCOMO to deploy its autonomous MantaRay SON Self-Organizing Networks solution in DOCOMO’ s multi-vendor LTE and 5G radio access network. This marks the first implementation in Japan of Nokia’ s 5G base station combined with DOCOMO’ s operational systems, bringing advanced automation and greater efficiency to 5G operations. The deployment is underway and will enhance both operational performance and customer experience.
MantaRay SON addresses the rising complexity of 5G networks, which span thousands of base stations and millions of cells. By automating routine tasks, it improves network quality and efficiency while reducing operational costs. Integrating the solution into DOCOMO’ s network enables automated planning, provisioning, and verification, along with closed-loop operations that detect and execute configuration changes without human intervention. This strengthens coordination across operational systems and ensures timely performance improvements. The solution will continue to evolve within DOCOMO’ s network, incorporating multi-vendor support, MantaRay AutoPilot, and Non- RT RIC capabilities for even greater automation and intelligence.
Mark Atkinson, Head of Radio Access Networks at Nokia, said:“ Nokia is proud to partner with NTT DOCOMO to bring AIdriven automation to Japan’ s telecom industry. MantaRay SON represents a major step forward in managing 5G complexity, delivering superior efficiency and customer experience.”
Masafumi Masuda, General Manager of Radio Access Design Department and Senior Vice President at NTT DOCOMO, added:“ Nokia’ s automated MantaRay SON will help us deliver a better customer experience by accelerating quality improvement cycles. Its open interfaces strengthen our O-RAN 5G network, while its AI features reduce costs and improve service quality.”
MantaRay SON is a core element of Nokia’ s Service Management and Orchestration framework, which applies AI to optimize network operations. It also supports DOCOMO’ s goal of achieving Level 4 autonomous operations, advancing automation across its infrastructure. The collaboration underscores both companies’ commitment to driving innovation in Japan’ s rapidly evolving mobile ecosystem for years ahead.
