CASE STUDY
By deploying our adaptive and scalable technology, we’ re helping to build a future-ready network that will bring reliable, highspeed connectivity to those who need it most.
Ciena 5184 at a Glance
• Up to 100GbE high-speed data delivery
• Secure, efficient IP transport
• Temperature-hardened for harsh environments
• Compact design suitable for street-level deployment
Designed to securely and efficiently handle IP transport traffic, Ciena’ s 5184 routers offer advanced features that improve network efficiency while reducing operational complexity. Importantly for Fiji’ s diverse geography, these routers are temperaturehardened and can be installed in street cabinets, bringing high-performance routing closer to local communities.
“ Our goal was to connect underserved regions throughout the North and the Savusavu to Labasa Fibre Project is an important step towards doing that,” said Mesake Tuinabua, Chief Technology Officer, Telecom Fiji.“ Next, we are focusing on extending the network so even more businesses and communities can benefit.”
Future-proofing with coherent pluggables
Looking ahead, Telecom Fiji is also planning to integrate Ciena’ s WaveLogic 5 Nano pluggables into the network. These compact, coherent optical modules represent the next evolution of network design, simplifying architecture by embedding coherent technology directly into routers.
WL5n pluggables deliver faster transmission speeds while offering cost, space and power efficiencies, critical considerations for operators expanding networks across geographically dispersed regions. By reducing the need for standalone optical platforms, Telecom Fiji can scale capacity more efficiently while maintaining operational agility.
These upgrades ensure the network can support a wide range of applications including Data Center Interconnect, metro-regional connectivity and future digital services that have yet to be imagined.
Building a more inclusive digital future
The impact of Telecom Fiji’ s investment extends far beyond technology. Reliable, high-speed connectivity enables economic participation, improves access to education and healthcare and strengthens disaster preparedness, a vital consideration in a cyclone-prone region.
“ This network upgrade is a great example of our shared commitment with Telecom Fiji to close the digital divide and connect more communities,” said Phil Rolle, Regional Managing Director, Subsea, Asia Pacific, Japan and India, Ciena.
“ By deploying our adaptive and scalable technology, we’ re helping to build a future-ready network that will bring reliable, high-speed connectivity to those who need it most.”
As Telecom Fiji continues to expand and evolve its fibre backbone, the Northern Division is no longer on the margins of the digital economy. Instead, it is becoming a connected, resilient and opportunity-rich region, one fibre link at a time. •
Enabling more than connectivity
With high-capacity fibre in place, Northern Fiji can support:
• Digital classrooms and remote learning
• Telehealth and connected healthcare services
• Cloud access for local businesses
• Disaster response coordination and early warning systems
