CASE STUDY
JASON DU PREEZ , SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MANAGER , APAC , SUGARCRM
From a technical perspective , what were challenges in meeting what Barnardos wanted from a common data practice solution ?
There are two key challenges . First , the number and complexity of the different existing systems in play . Barnardos has many other agencies it needs to interface with and government compliance requirements which change too . When these other systems don ’ t all have APIs or ready-built connectors it takes work to connect to them . This is justified by reducing double handling / manual entry of data and allows case officers to focus on more valuable work .
The second challenge is building a common data model . When many systems reference a client but have different means of identifying them , it takes work to match / rationalise who the individual is . The investment of time is worth it because it reduces the likelihood of errors – to the benefit of the children that Barnardos seeks to serve .
1 . Usability . The interface looked easy to use , incredibly important when considering the diversity of users and their varying levels of digital fluency .
2 . Flexibility . The Sugar platform is highly malleable and this was demonstrated live to key technical stakeholders to the project . The Barnardos team could see themselves realistically running this themselves and not having to pay for every little change .
3 . Partnership . The way the Sugar team engaged and collaborated was in the true spirit of partnership . The Barnardos team saw Sugar is highly committed to helping them deliver their outcomes and willing to be incredibly flexible to make this happen .
What lessons did SugarCRM learn from the Barnardos project that could apply to future work in the third sector ?
The project team has already acknowledged the value of strong governance and finding the right balance between that and project team autonomy . It is vital for the third sector to prove their investments are worthwhile and delivering incremental value is one way of demonstrating good stewardship skills . p
